Pittsburg University student Summer 2024 visit to Northern Ireland - School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS)

[inter-professional studies in health, rehabilitation, and education]

We recently welcomed two groups of students led by Dr. Janice Vance from Pittsburg University as part of their course Inter-professional Studies in Health, Rehabilitation, and Education: Children with Disabilities.

Dr. Vance from the Department of Communication Science and Disorders, University of Pittsburgh, was excited to add The Cedar Foundation to the list of the schools, clinics, and centers that she visits during her 'SHRS in Ireland Study Abroad Program' each summer.

Since 2006, Dr. Vance has been offering University of Pittsburgh students the opportunity to participate in study abroad programs that stress the importance of inter-professional practice - within and across the fields of health, rehabilitation, and education. The students participating in these opportunities come from various pre-professional undergraduate programs in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and other Majors throughout the university.

Through visits to a range of schools and clinics, as well as input from professionals in health, education, and psychology, the students gained important information about the connected and complementary roles of a wide range of professionals, as they provide service and care to individuals with disabilities.

Inclusion of The Cedar Foundation reflects Dr. Vance’s desire to help students appreciate the critical role of support services beyond the classroom and clinic, allowing children and adults with disabilities to fully realise their full potential and become engaged within their communities. As the students progress through their studies and into professional roles, it is anticipated that this critical input will allow them to appreciate their roles as part of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency efforts to provide the best support and care for their clients and their families.

Dr. Vance thanked the Cedar Foundation staff for their invaluable input and is looking forward to including this important visit and learning opportunity in future years to come.

We were delighted to have the students visit our Balmoral office where we delivered presentations on Cedar and the various services that we provide for children and adults with disabilities.

We wish the students all the best for their future studies!
