NEW Older People 55+ Floating Support Service

Our new floating support service will help older people across the Moyle, Downpatrick, Lisburn and Newtownards area.

The new service will help anyone aged 55 and over.  Service users receive ‘housing related support’, enabling them to develop independent living skills to maintain their tenancy and prevent homelessness, like the existing Regional Floating Support Service.

The type of support you would receive includes:

·       Support to ensure service users are in receipt of all benefit entitlements

·       Budget/Debt Management

·       Accessing social/recreational activities

·       Adaptations and repairs

·       Tenancy rights/responsibilities and disputes

·       Home safety

·       Home management skills

·       Access to health/medical facilities

The Older FS Scheme is a short-term funded service, meaning service users may receive support from a few weeks, up to a maximum of two years.

Service delivery during the COVID – 19 pandemic has been delivered face-to-face, as agreed with service users and ‘social distancing’ measures are implemented while working.  Support has also been delivered remotely, using telephone, e-mails and social media tools, for example, WhatsApp, Messenger etc.

How do I Apply?

The service can be accessed through referral from the following:

  • Allied professionals from the Health and Social Care Trusts
  • The Northern Ireland Housing Executive
  • Housing Associations
  • GP Practices
  • other voluntary/community-based bodies
  • Individuals needing ‘housing related’ support may also self-refer.

Floating Support Regional Services

This week we are shining the spotlight on our Floating Support services across Northern Ireland. Our Support Services team assists adults living in their own home to carry out their housing responsibilities as independently as possible by tailoring a programme to suit their individual needs.

What support is provided?

All services are focused on the goals of the person and based on partnership working with them, their families and other health professionals.

The programme is tailored to suit each individual. Time is spent initially to design and agree a personal Support Plan. Typically support is up to 6 hours per week over 6 - 9 months. Support covers things like:

  • Budget management
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle
  • Home safety
  • Finding sources of benefits advice and information
  • Knowing your rights as a tenant
  • Meeting tenant responsibilities
  • Developing social and life skills
  • Sourcing advice on adaptations for the home

Support is short term and does not include personal care support but is ideal if you require advice to help you have a more independent, less chaotic lifestyle.
