Transitions Participant Owen shines at Young People’s Awards

Thursday 26 April 2018

On March 28th Owen Coyle, who is involved in our Youth Matters and Transitions service in the North West, received the Courage Award in the Young People’s Derry Credit Union Awards at the City Hotel. He was nominated by his neighbour for his participation in extensive activities while living with a number of conditions including cerebral palsy and autism. His active work with Project Sparks, which facilitates music workshops for primary school children, and his personal academic achievements have exemplified his determined nature. Owen has been dedicated to excellence achieving qualifications in mainstream education gaining four B’s and three C’s in his GCSE’s while also attaining exemplary levels in Music and Drama.

In Owen’s own words:

“I felt very privileged to be just nominated, so when I won I felt so proud and was very excited going up to the stage to get it.  Then when we won with Project Sparks too I was buzzing.”

Owen’s mum, Una, added: “Owen has been with Cedar for four years. He has completed personal development courses and stress management courses.  He also attends Our Space with Cedar every Thursday night.  He loves going to the cinema with Youth Matters.  Cedar will now assist Owen and our family with the transition process to NWRC in September.”

Everyone at Cedar would like to congratulate Owen on this achievement and we look forward to following his progression as he works towards his Level 3 Diploma in Music Performance at NWRC.
