Cedar Boccia teams get the ball rolling

Nine teams from across Cedar’s Inclusion Matters services were delighted to recently take part in the Senior Boccia Championships 2016, hosted by Disability Sports NI at Lagan Valley Leisureplex in Lisburn.  For many of the teams this was their first foray into competitive Boccia and they all had a great experience with the Motorhead (Cedar North Down & Ards group) only narrowly losing the in final to claim second place in the tournament.  Twenty six teams from all over Northern Ireland took part including nine Cedar teams from our Inclusion Matters programmes with three Belfast teams, Three Lisburn, two Downpatrick and three from North Down and Ards area.  The tournament began with a knock out stage resulting is some very closely fought contests.  The Cedar Hotshots and Motorhead teams both progressed through to the quarter-finals with the Hotshots having a great 6-1 win in their quarter final match against Manor Aces.  Unfortunately they lost out to the Ardarragh Hotshots in the semi-final but claimed a well-deserved fourth place in the tournament.  The Cedar Motorhead team won their semi-final against the Lisburn Legends 3-1 to secure their place in the final against Ardarragh Hotshots, who claimed the final victory with a score of 3-2.  The Motorhead (Cedar Foundation NDA) were delighted to pick up their silver medals.

Through the Cedar Inclusion Matters programmes a number of local Boccia clubs meet weekly with the clubs holding both practice sessions and local competitions.  In December Cedars North Down and Ards Boccia club, which meets at St Marks Church Newtownards, hosted the annual local competition.  This was attended by teams from all over the South Eastern Trust and proved to be a perfect local warm up for these teams prior to the regional competition in Lisburn on the 9th February.
