Switch to High Contrast Stylesheet
Want to do something different? Great! Maybe take on a challenge, meet some great people and raise money for an excellent cause? Brilliant! Because we’ve got a fantastic event scheduled for 9th October 2010 in aid of The Cedar Foundation. Interested? Read on to find out a little more...
We challenge you to climb the stunning Slieve Donard Mountain, at 850 metres it's Northern Ireland's Highest Peak. On a clear day (keep your fingers crossed) you can see the key landmarks such as the Belfast Hills and Scrabo, the Wicklow Hills, the Isle of Man and even Scotland - you might even see your house!
To get involved all that you need to do is pay a £20 registration fee and raise a minimum of £80 in sponsorship, do a little training, turn up and have a great day out! Bring your Family, Friends or Work Colleagues and make an event of it.
When you register we will provide all the necessary materials to include a suggested training list, a suggested equipment list and any other information specific to the walk to help you prepare. On the day we will provide a registration and advice point along with a team to support you at key stages along the route, check you in at the Summit and reward you with your well deserved Certificate.
Slieve Donard at 850m (2,789 ft) is the highest of the Mourne Mtns. and the highest peak in Northern Ireland. Literally rising from the sea, the main access point starts in the seaside town of Newcastle and meanders alongside the Glen River to where it meets and follows the impressive Mourne Wall to the summit. The views from the summit are extensive and on a clear day the views over the high Mournes, most of Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Wicklow, Donegal, Wales and even Scotland can be breathtaking.
The route is a total of 5.5 miles long and takes an average of 3 hours of climbing to reach the summit and an average of 2 hours descending back to Newcastle. Many people will complete the route in less time while others may take a little longer depending on personal fitness levels.
To provide you with a greater level of daylight, we hold an early registration from 8.30am with participants starting to climb no later than 9.30am. We operate an 'At your Pace' system whereby we Marshall the route, meeting, greeting and checking you through at key points on the route while you set your pace in between.
Leave the car park in Donard Park heading towards the mountain and follow the Glen River uphill through old woodland of Scots Pine, Oak and BirchIf you have any queries regarding the Slieve Donard Challenge, please contact Christine Tweedie, The Cedar Foundation’s Fundraising Co-Ordinator on (028) 9066 6188 or email c.tweedie@cedar-foundation.org
