ATLAS
Adaptive Technology Leading Assessment Solutions
The Atlas Project was developed to address the skill shortage for Assistive Technology Assessors due to increasing demand for Assistive Technology Assessments to be completed. Other factors that were taken into consideration were to enable disabled people to gain greater inclusion facilitated by cutting edge assistive technology, complementing the Digital Inclusion Strategy for Northern Ireland.
Assistive Technology works best when it is customised through individual assessment. The provision of ‘fit all’ assistive technology supplied at some venues is a step forward, but tailored technology that ‘follows’ the individual is what is required.
This training programme is for anyone who would like to train as an Adaptive Technology Assessor. The Project will recruit 15 (5 per group) people over 2 years. The second run of the course will start in September 07 and end in March 08 (17 week programme – Approx 6 Months).
This Project is funded through The Cedar Foundation and Proteus (ESF and Peace and Reconciliation Funds) who have 14 years project management experience.
There will be 5 phases within the training programme:
1. Disability and Brain Injury Awareness and User Forum – 1 day training facilitated by The Cedar Foundation User Forum and Staff. Reconciliation and Development of a Shared Vision – 1½ days training/facilitation by external consultant.
2. Assistive Technologies and their Application – 12 days (classroom based) practical training, including a site visit to Enable Ireland and virtual networking with UK based (Ian Karten Centre) CTEC Centres led by Project Staff. Each module covered (total of 8) will require an assignment to be completed.
3. Best Practice in Assessment and Training (AbilityNet) – (60 hours approx) training customised to meet the needs of the project.
4. Practical Assessment, Training and Application of Assistive Technology – 1 Month to undertake practical assignment/project with mentor support.
This will include 3 individual practical assessments, delivery of follow up training to ensure the most efficient and effective use of the technology is used for the 3 people assessed.
This will require the most appropriate technology to be used with each individual’s requirement and environment, e.g. work placement, training venue, or community based activity. (Work placement is required for the completion of these practical assessments).
5. A one day site visit to Enable Ireland, Dublin will be organised to spend some time at their Centre.
