Training for Life after Brain Injury

Date Posted: Thursday 10 April 2008

Train for Life after Brain InjuryThe Cedar Foundation chose the theme A Life Less Ordinary – Train for Life after Brain Injury to promote Brain Injury Awareness Week which took place from 31st March – 4th April 2008. The Foundation is a local charity that works throughout Northern Ireland developing and delivering services for disabled people, including those with acquired brain injury.

Cedar chose the theme to make people aware of how much life changes after Brain Injury for those with the injury and their family and friends. Elaine Armstrong, Head of Brain Injury Services at Cedar explains more:

“Life can be busy and stressful in “ordinary” lives, but there are so many more challenges to face after Brain Injury. During the National week long event to raise awareness of Brain Injury, The Cedar Foundation teamed up with Health Matters to run training days across Northern Ireland. The training targeted ordinary skills that are all the more important for those who have survived a Brain Injury and are re-training for work, life and living. This included accredited training in stress awareness, First Aid and Health & Safety”.

She continues:

“The Cedar Foundation has services throughout Northern Ireland, providing support with housing management in people’s own homes and vocational rehabilitation for those who want to move towards employment”.

Train for Life after Brain InjuryDean, a Brain Injury Services trainee added:

“The Cedar Foundation has been extremely helpful following my brain injury both on a personal level by helping me get back to education and by working alongside staff in my work place and helping them understand the extent of my problem. Their help has been invaluable at a difficult time in my life.”

Damien Crossan, also commented:

“The Cedar Foundation gave me an understanding that I’m not alone and others have similar difficulties. It has built up my confidence and helped my socialising skills in terms of mixing with other trainees and in my voluntary placement. I find the staff are very helpful and approachable.”
