Tour of Twisel for New Trust BossOn Friday 9th October 2009, Hugh McCaughey, the new Chief Executive of the South Eastern Heath and Social Care Trust, was invited to a coffee morning at Twisel Lodge in Holywood, for a tour of the residential and respite facility and the opportunity to meet with staff, service users and their parents.

Originally established by the Karen Mortlock Trust, Twisel Lodge is now part of The Cedar Foundation managed in partnership with Habinteg Housing Association.

Twisel Lodge is home to 7 permanent residents with complex physical and learning disabilities. In response to the urgent need for a community respite service for families Cedar worked in partnership with the South Eastern Trust and Habinteg to deliver the new service. This expansion required significant remodelling of the building including internal restructuring of the dining and lounge facilities, a sun room extension, the development of an additional bedroom, and adaptations to the staff sleep in facility. The works, which were funded by the Trust, were completed in August 2008 and the respite service commenced in September 2008.

The success of the service has centred around the close partnership working between Twisel staff, the Learning Disability Social Work Team, the Ravara Day Centre and the families.’

Hugh McCaughey, Chief Executive of the new South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust commented; ‘I have been very impressed by the state of the art facilities and the development of a respite facility here at Twisel Lodge. From speaking to the families here today who avail of the respite service, I can say that Twisel is an exemplar partnership model that I would like to see replicated to improve respite provision in other areas within and beyond the Trust. I would like to commend The Cedar Foundation for their pioneering work in this area
