This year saw the thirteenth annual summer school jointly organised by the Cedar Foundation Training Services (Eastern) and Community Development at the South Eastern Regional College (SERC). This year's summer school included the Lisburn campus for the first time. The programme covered classes in Light Decorative Metalwork (Bangor campus), Arts and Crafts (Lisburn campus) and Cookery Challenge (Ards campus), and ran for two weeks in August. Everyone who took part was presented with a certificate by Lady Hermon, MP, Patron of the Summer School at the traditional end-of-school lunch at the Ards Campus on Friday, 15th August.
SERC Community Development in partnership with the Cedar Foundation is delighted at the successful completion of the summer school. The enthusiasm of all involved has ensured that students and staff enjoyed the sample courses on offer over the two weeks. The summer school provides an opportunity for participants to experience the college and hopefully avail of courses in the future. SERC Community Development offers a range of scheduled adult education programmes in community based out-centres. A number of discrete courses for adults with disabilities are also offered. If you would like more information, please contact Alma Wardlow on 028 9127 6816 or awardlow@serc.ac.uk.
One of the key features of the summer school is the opportunity it presents to sample something for the very first time. A more important feature is induction. As the summer school takes place in a mainstream and inclusive third-level learning environment, it acts as a key induction tool for those young people thinking about making the transition from secondary-level education to FE. This is particularly important for those young people who have attended special school. The summer school also enables The Cedar Foundation to keep in touch with some of the people who have accessed our Training Services over the years and who have since moved on in their lives, thus ensuring a very practical means of follow-up contact.
