Cedar Trainee Jim McGeough spoke recently at a conference, organised by the Southern Area Supported Employment Consortium, to highlight the supported employment initiatives, training and education opportunities aimed at people with physical disabilities or sensory impairments.
The consortium is a multi agency group currently made up of representatives from the community and voluntary sector, education, training and health. Member organisations include The Cedar Foundation, Clanrye Employment and Training Services, Disability Action, NIUSE, RNIB, RNID, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust and Willowbank Resource Centre.
The theme of the day was ‘Making it work?’ and was aimed at facilitating discussion between persons with physical disabilities and sensory impairments and the consortium. The organisers will be drawing up a strategic plan for action that will inform participants and providers of current services. It will also identify gaps in current policy and programmes that do not necessarily encompass the needs of individuals.
The conference is one of a series of events facilitated by the consortium that seeks to engage with and inform local people with disabilities about the services and opportunities in their area.
