A group of young people aged 8-14 from Newry recently completed a Cultural Arts Project named 'Illuminate' with The Cedar Foundation Youth Matters Programme. The primary aim of the project was to explore food and art culture from various countries around the world, which represent the ethnic communities around Newry.
Part of the programme included food and drink tasting sessions from countries such as Portugal, China, Lithuania, Brazil, Poland and the Caribbean. Young people explored and created some artefacts that have origins from Far East and South America; local artist Hazel Boland facilitated these sessions. During some of the sessions, young people also experimented in addressing people in a variety of languages.
In total six service users participated in the six week project. One of the young people, Newry boy, Patrick McCabe aged 9 said, "I really enjoyed the project, I hope I can do another one like it again."
The young people attended a special meal marking the Chinese New Year and the end of the project. Illuminate was supported by SELB Community Relations Support Scheme.
