Cedar Foundation staff working on the Active Futures Programme are looking for new trainees to join the programme in the Causeway area. Active Futures is run in partnership with The Northern Health and Social Care Trust and supports young people with physical and/or sensory disabilities, ensuring a smooth transition from school to employment, further education and community based programmes across a range of social, recreational, voluntary, vocational and educational sectors.
Leona McAllister, a trainee explains more:
“My name is Leona, I am 17 years old and I live outside Rasharkin. I have recently joined The Cedar Foundation; my Social Worker introduced me to it. I'm now glad I found out about it, as I was having trouble working out what I wanted to do next, as I didn’t want to go back to school after one year out due to surgery. The Project Worker who works with me helped me look at lots of different courses, this was a long process as I couldn't find the right course to suit me, I have now found a night class where I am doing an NVQ level 2 in Business and Admin, which is what I was looking for as I work full time. Cedar has benefited me greatly as they have showed me so many paths I can go down in the future, and if I ever need any help they are more than happy to assist. The people who work in Cedar, are all very helpful and very approachable they treat me like an adult and not a teenager. In the future I hope to better myself with more qualifications. I would recommend Cedar to anyone who needs help with their career prospects.”
Heather McKillop, a trainee on the programme tells us more:
“My name is Heather and I live in Coleraine, I have a physical disability in that I have problems with balance when I am walking, I find stairs and uneven surfaces a bit of a hazard, I also have a moderate learning disability. I was referred to the Active Futures programme for 18 - 25 year olds, by my social worker. I was accepted onto the programme and assigned a key worker, who’s role it is to support me through my two years on the programme. We developed a Personal Action Plan together based on my needs and whatI hope to achieve. The Active Futures Programmeis supporting me to complete an NVQ level 2 in Administration at the Northern Regional College in Ballymoney. My key workersourced a suitable work placement for me, which will assist me to gained valuableskillsto complete my NVQ and to hopefully find employment once my course is completed. The Active Futures team will help support me through thisandI do not wish my disability to stop me from employment and getting a job/career. The Team also organise social event which are optional like going to the gym, summer schemes and getting more involved with your local community”.
