Cedar’s Weeders and Growers is a gardening project based in the Foyle area of Northern Ireland. Through local contacts The Cedar Foundation was able to rent an allotment from the green fingers project at the Playtrail, a local community based initiative. This gave the staff at Cedar the chance to develop a project with disabled children and young people from the local area.
The project involved the development of a “show garden” and the growing of fruit and vegetables in a raised bed that was accessible to wheelchair users. The children and young people designed, developed and planted much of the show garden and with the help of the conservation volunteers (to do all the hard work!!) their vision became a reality.
The children have had the opportunity to plant, grow and eat their own vegetables, learn about the environment and see their goals and aspirations become a reality.
We now plan to expand our project further by renting more space and involving more disabled young people in the development and extension of the “show garden”.
This project was made possible by the help from the Conservation Volunteers and funding from ‘O2 Its Your Community’ awards.
