The great and the good of Northern Ireland got themselves arrested last Friday (29th) at the BT Tower in Belfast, and it was The Cedar Foundation's fault! However, there's no need to get alarmed, it was for a very good reason.
The Cedar Foundation's Jail & Bail, organised in conjunction with BT, is a high profile event that?s great fun and generates vital funds for the work of physical disability charity The Cedar Foundation. All the 'budding criminals' had to do was have a couple of hours to spare and be able to raise just £500 (or more if they want) as 'Bail' to get out of the BT Tower. On arrival at BT Tower, Lanyon Place they were directed to ?jail? which was the executive lounge of the Tower, they were charged with being a member of the caring community, fingerprinted and photographed.
Then the 15 'caring criminals', including Councillor Ruth Patterson, The High Sheriff of Belfast and representatives from Benedicts Hotel, University of Ulster, Northbrook Technologies and The Northern Bank to name just a few, were allowed two hours to raise their bail money. They were able to call friends, colleagues and business contacts and some even brought the 'bail dosh' with them on the day to speed their release along. Special guest and chief prosecutor for the day was Olivia Nash 'Ma' from Give my Head Peace", so the 'craic' was brilliant and most importantly the 15 'jailbirds' raised nearly £10,000 for a very worthwhile cause.
Christine Tweedie, Fundraising Officer with The Cedar Foundation added: "Jail & Bail really is a fun event and all you need to have to take part is a couple of hours, a good sense of humour and a relaxed attitude to being in the spotlight. Everyone who takes part thoroughly enjoys themselves and we give everyone a memento of the day, a copy of their fingerprints and a set of handcuffs lapel badge. It?s a great way to raise the profile and funds of The Cedar Foundation without taking up too much of anyone's precious time".
The Cedar Foundation works in partnership with people with physical disability throughout Northern Ireland to deliver a range of services, which empower and support people with disabilities to be fully included in their communities.
