Nine intrepid explorers have just returned from a once in a lifetime wilderness trek to British Columbia, Canada, to raise funds for The Cedar Foundation.
Nearly £25,000 has been raised by the nine adventurous people who trekked 80 km over a 5 day period, experiencing the wonderful scenery and wildlife and making new friends along the way.
The Cedar Foundation works in partnership with people in Northern Ireland with physical disability and/or brain injury. All the money raised will go towards the further development of Children and Young People?s Services in Northern Ireland. This rapidly expanding service will benefit greatly from the fantastic amount that has been raised through the Canadian Trek.
The trekkers were Marlene Marcus, Jim Burns, Maeve McElroy, Tonya McCormac, Rosie McNaughton, Helena McTaggart, Laura Porter, Norman Black and Ben Willis. All they had to do to take part in the trip was to have a sense of adventure and raise the £2500 sponsorship money required and they did this in a wide variety of ways, ranging from fashion nights and garden open days to abseils and pampering evenings.
Tonya McCormac, Head of Children and Young People's Services for The Cedar Foundation took part in the trek. She comments:
"The trek was an absolutely amazing experience. We all thoroughly enjoyed it, the scenery was breathtaking, it really was an unforgettable experience. British Columbia is extremely beautiful, we knew we were going to have a great trip but we didn?t expect it to be just so incredible. We are already looking forward to the opportunity to do the next one."
Christine Tweedie, Fundraiser with The Cedar Foundation adds:
"A lot of hard work and effort went into the plans and preparation for the Canadian 2004 Trek, but it was certainly worth it. It was a once in a lifetime experience for all those who took part and it has raided a lot of money for our organisation. It has also helped raise the profile of The Cedar Foundation across Northern Ireland. Details of the 2006 Challenge Trek will be announced in March 2005 so check the press for further details".
Plans are already being made for The Cedar Foundation?s next challenge in 2006. The experiences that the 2004 Canadian trekkers have brought back with them are sure to encourage more people to take up the Challenge to raise funds for Children and Young People in Northern Ireland with physical disability.
