Project Resource Success for The Cedar Foundation

Date Posted: Wednesday 01 September 2004

Project Resource SuccessThe Cedar Foundation enjoyed yet another success with a celebration of achievement for the trainees who have completed their Project Resource Programme, at a special presentation at BIFHE, Brunswick Street recently.

The Belfast based Programme, funded by Proteus under PEACE II funds and accredited by NIOCN, trains people to become Disability Resource Workers for the Further Education Sector. Participants learn core skills such as Disability Awareness Training, Child & Vulnerable Adult Protection Training, Basic I.C.T. and First Aid. Optional Units include Working with Sensory Impairments, Note Taking, Providing Personal Care and ECDL.

Participants were delighted to receive their certificates which enable them to gain employment as Disability Resource Workers for people within Northern Ireland with physical disability and/or brain injury. The Project Resource qualification is becoming more and more important, both BIFHE and the BBC have decided that when they place ads for Disability Resource Workers that the Project Resource qualification is now a desirable criteria.

Denise Clements, Project Resource Officer with The Cedar Foundation said:

"I am delighted with the success of the project, 14 people have received their certificates today with many more working their way through the current course and 36 people recruited in total over 4 groups. People have made new friends and learnt new skills and most importantly it has given them the confidence and qualification to find new jobs. I would like to thank Proteus, BIFHE for hosting the event, all the speakers and Patsy Bell, who has previously represented GB in the special Olympics and is Chairman of Disability Sports N,I who very kindly came along to present the certificates".

Some of the comments that have been coming back from trainees on the Project Resource Course are proof in itself that the programme is a success. Comments such as: "The practical sessions in personal care were excellent and boosted my confidence". "The Work placement is what I remember most clearly and what will stay with me. It affected attitudes most". "You forget about the disability and just see the person" and "I have just secured a full-time job working with disabled and able-bodied adults. I wouldn't have got it without this training".
