The Cedar Foundation played a key role in the organisation of a Job Fair, held recently in Belfast that promoted REAL job opportunities. Fourteen employers, including Translink, Mater Hospitals, LIDL and Halifax advertised posts, offering initial interviews and helping with the application forms of those attending on the day. The Cedar Foundation was one of several other organisations offering additional advice and guidance, including benefits advice on the day, to either those with a disability or families and carers who were hoping to return to work or go into training. The event was attended by over 400 people and was officially opened by Patricia McAuley, Director of the Department of Education and Learning; Doug Garrett, the Deputy Chief Executive of the Laganside Corporation and Councillor Martin Morgan, Lord Mayor of Belfast.
Denise Clements, Project Resource Officer with The Cedar Foundation adds: "The Cedar Foundation as a taskforce member was delighted to have been involved in the organisation of this important event and to have been able to offer advice and guidance on the day. The aims of the Taskforce include promoting real job and training opportunities and addressing barriers to employment. As an organisation which tries to promote choice and equality for those with disabilities, The Cedar Foundation are keen to be involved - particularly since North Belfast has one of the highest rates of residents with disabilities province-wide."
The Cedar Foundation is a member of an Employment Taskforce that highlights barriers to employment faced by those with disabilities. The North Belfast Employment Taskforce was set up in 2002 to address unemployment in the area. It is made up of representatives from community groups, the voluntary sector, statutory agencies, employer and trade unions. Three of the main aims of the Taskforce including raising awareness of potential employment, developing projects designed to secure jobs and address barriers to employment.
