People from all over North Down and Ards have been taking part in The Cedar Foundation?s ninth consecutive summer school, which has been running for the past two weeks in the Bangor and Newtownards colleges of the North Down and Ards Institute. Between 15 and 20 people with physical disabilities have attended classes in Computers and Light Decorative Metalwork (Bangor) and Horticulture and Light Vehicle Maintenance (N'Ards). The summer school ends this Friday with a celebratory BBQ at the Ulster Community & Hospitals Trust?s Bayview Resource Centre on the Groomsport Road in Bangor when a wrought iron garden seat made by the Light Decorative Metalwork class will be presented to The Friends of Bayview.
Peter McNamee of The Cedar Foundation comments: "We have been organising the summer school in conjunction with the North Down and Ards Institute for the last nine years and we are looking forward to the tenth anniversary summer school next year. Every year is different, and this year those taking part in Light Decorative Metalwork decided to combine their many talents and energies in undertaking a project. This resulted in a wrought ironwork garden seat with intricate scroll work and an engraved brass plaque which will be presented to The Friends of Bayview at the BBQ."
Peter continues:
"All in all, this year has been a resounding success and The Cedar Foundation is looking forward to next year with great anticipation. As always, the tutors and staff of the North Down and Ards Institute have been wonderful. I would also like to thank the Ulster Community and Hospitals Trust and The European Social Fun for their continued support of our Integration Development, Job Support and Community Inclusion programmes which we operate locally from our offices in Bayview Resource Centre". The summer school serves several purposes. It enables The Cedar Foundation to meet people who have moved on from their programmes over the years and it provides valuable learning experiences for people who are currently on the programme. But most of all, it enables people who are thinking about taking part in one of The Cedar Foundation's training programmes to come along to the summer school, take part in some of the classes and find out about third-level, mainstream learning before making their final decision.
The Cedar Foundation would also like to thank the many people who sponsored the BBQ: Bombardier Aerospace Shorts (Newtownabbey), Farm Fresh, Primacy Meats, Glens of Antrim Water, Centra, Ards Leisure Centre, J Smyth & Son, Friends of Bayview, Sainsburys and the Co-Op.
