Date Posted: Monday 28 June 2004

The Monday PlayersJust what are the issues facing people with physical disabilities in Northern Ireland today? That was the subject taken on by The Monday Players, a group of physically disabled people who performed their latest piece, called "The Award" at The Cedar Foundation?s Training Centre in Belfast.

The group decide as a team the subject and perceptions they are going to explore within drama workshops before polishing their performance. Their piece took a wry look at some of the barriers faced by disabled people in the workplace through improvisation and exploratory theatre.

Open Arts run the drama group, which consist of 11 people, 5 of whom are supported by The Cedar Foundation. The recently named Monday Players, are funded by Belfast City Council and The Arts Council and meet every Monday afternoon in the Crescent Arts Centre.

Nuala Trainor, Integration Development Officer with The Cedar Foundation said:

"The group, mostly perform pieces with a message of inclusion, highlighting the issues that effect people who have a physical disability, as can be seen from their piece. I would particularly like to say a big thank-you to all the members of the group and their facilitator Angie McManus for all the hard work they have put into the performance. It?s very clear to see just how much The Monday Players love performing and I am looking forward to seeing their next production".

Angie McManus, the groups facilitator adds:

"The chemistry of the group has proved very enduring and many strong bonds have been formed throughout the year. The group really enjoy performing and it?s good to know that they are highlighting important subjects that affect people with physical disabilities, especially young people, such as lack of leisure facilities and employment opportunities."
