World Expert in Brain Injury visits The Cedar Foundation

Date Posted: Monday 14 June 2004

Dr Jeffrey KreutzerDr Jeffrey Kreutzer, a world expert in the rehabilitation of people with Brain Injury, visited The Cedar Foundation recently to share his knowledge with the Foundation's Vocational Rehabilitation staff and a range of professionals from Community Brain Injury Teams. Dr Kreutzer, who is Professor of Neuropsychology at the Virginia Commonwealth University, USA, talked specifically about approaches to supporting survivors of brain injury to return to work. Return to work is a particularly important issue as 75% of individuals with brain injury are young men between the ages of 16 and 35 years.

Dr Kreutzer highlighted how people with brain injury typically have a number of problems which interfere with their ability to regain and maintain independence. These can include problems with stamina, memory, lack of insight, confidence, stress and anger management. His research demonstrates that without specialist intervention services, such as those provided by the Cedar Foundation, individuals do not get the training and support required to live and work productively after their injury. Instead, many are isolated at home, which has not only implications for themselves but their families and the wider community.

Eileen Thomson, Deputy Chief Executive of The Cedar Foundation adds:

"It was an exceptional occasion to have one of the leading experts in the world in the rehabilitation of individuals with brain injury with us, sharing with enthusiasm and commitment, his clinical experience and research. Specialist services for people with brain injury are still at quite an early developmental stage in Northern Ireland and this was a great opportunity to learn from the best".
