The Cedar Foundation Impress at Independent Living

Date Posted: Monday 14 June 2004

Independent Living ExhibitionThe Cedar Foundation continued to raise its profile by attending the recent Independent Living Exhibition, held at the prestigious venue of the Odyssey Arena, Belfast. The Exhibition let people with disabilities, their family and friends, carers and professionals view and experience the very latest in personal and home equipment and mobility aids to help with personal independence.

The Cedar Foundation was there to promote their different services, Children and Young People's Services, Training Services and Independent & Supported Living, for people in Northern Ireland with physically disability and/or brain injury. These services are available throughout Northern Ireland, as the various staff and Service Users explained to members of the public who visited the stand. There was a lot of very genuine interest, as Joe Bourke, one of the Cedar Foundation's Service Users explains:

"I was approached numerous times by people who showed a genuine interest and asked intelligent questions about The Cedar Foundation, such as where would they find The Cedar Foundation and what did people gain from joining the organisation? I was able to tell them about the different branches located around the province. Also how The Cedar Foundation help disabled folk get further education in main stream colleges and how to help them get voluntary work where one of the support workers from The Cedar Foundation will go to the place of work with the disabled person and help them settle in and assist them in aspects of the work they are unable to do because of their disability."

Joe continues:

"As well as many able-bodied people, I found a lot of the people that approached me were either disabled themselves or had a friend or member of their family that was disabled. I really enjoyed taking part in the Exhibition and telling the visitors to the exhibition what The Cedar Foundation did."
